Shouts: can't 'exploit flanks' and 'look for overlap' at same time

Recommended Posts

All the other shouts you can cue up. But these two just over write the other. Is this on purpose?

No you can't. 'Retain possession' and 'Get the ball forward' overwrite each other. Shouts that conflict with each other do not run at the same time.

This is indeed on purpose and contrary to what your first sentence says, almost every shout has its opposite that negates it! Pass into space or pass into feet, play wider or narrower, get stuck in or stay on feet, hassle opponents or stand off opponents, work ball into box or shoot on sight, clear to flanks or pump into box, etc, etc, etc. It's all very obvious. ;)

When you use 'exploit the flanks', you will notice that your FBs are already with RFD and CB on often. That's what 'look for overlap' does but wingers will get tucked in abit more instead while for 'exploit the flanks', wingers and fullbacks both stay wide to attack the flanks with crosses. So you must choose either 1...

look for overlap i imagine to mean something like the following...

your wingers/widemen will hold the ball up trying to draw the FB to them say if they are being man marked allowing your FB/WB's the chance to run into the space down the flanks to put crosses in, Or if you are playing with a narrow midfield with no wide players your own FB/WB will look to push on when you are attacking and attack the opposition FB or get in behind him to exploit any space in that area of the pitch.

but i could be wrong :)
