Fan confidence in cups.

Recommended Posts

I'm playing as Cambridge United, just promoted to League 2. In the Second Round of the League Cup I played EPL Bolton away from home. Amazingly I managed to draw 2-2 in normal time thanks to a dramatic last minute equaliser. My players completely ran out of stamina in extra time and the final score was 5-2 to bolton.

I continued, after telling my boys I was proud of their effort, only to find the fans were disappointed with the result! To me this seems completely wrong. A League 2 team just took an EPL team to extra time away from home - as a Cambridge United fan myself I'd be delighted if we managed it in real life.

What I suggest is that in cup games with the possibility of extra time (particularly involving vastly differing sides), more emphasis is put on milestones like making it to extra time or penalties, since losing 5-2 in extra time is actually closer to winning than losing 3-2 in 90 minutes.
