Angry at Extreme 2nd Leg Comeback

Recommended Posts

I'm in the Champions League Semi Finals right now, beat Porto 5-0 in the first leg at home, second leg I have just lost 6-0. I was 4-0 down by half time. They had 13 shots on goal, 8 on target and scored 6, with one coming in the 93rd minute to win the game (Which was apparently offside).

This is a recurring theme in the game too. I beat Wolfsburg 4-0 at home, go to their ground? 3-0 down by half time. Luckily there was no harm done and I squeezed through despite being outplayed, the complete opposite to how it was when I was at home.

The previous round? Beat Besiktas 3-0 at home, go to their ground? 2-0 down by half time. This wasn't as bad as the other two round though.

I know there are going to be plenty of knobs on here who vigorously defend the game and SI and tell me it's all my fault, it's my tactics, i'm crap at the game, this is football blah blah blah, but that's ridiculous. I feel robbed.

Remember, I was 5-0 up - and there was nothing I could do. I changed my tactics, I tried to go defensively, I tried to contain them, etc. They scored 6. How often has that ever happened in real life? I was extremely angry at half time, and I still couldn't muster a single goal, despite having 5 shots on target.

That was 3-0 at half time, and they won on penalties. I just lost 6-0, despite holding a 5-0 advantage.

Have another read. They had 8 shots on target an converted 6 of them. Now you tell me one team in real life who that's happened too.

The game in Instanbul an some meaningless 7 aside game are irrelevant and poor examples.

Don't moan about something if you can't handle it when somebody presents you with real life examples.

In each example, you've won at home and lost away. This happens, especially when a team is overconfident and complacent, which is exactly the example provided to you by Stevie_G_32201. Milan became complacent in the second half and Liverpool ripped them apart.

There's a pattern and it points to team-talks.

Is it just yourself who's allowed to win by a decent scoreline? Instead of bitching, perhaps you should be a little more constructive. Each defeat has been away from home. Do you set your team up differently to combat this or do you just keep with your current tactics?

It is a bit far fetched that a team can win 6-0 having lost the first leg by five but you will have played your part in it.

My team played a team and lost 3-1 recently - they had 3 shots on target......

My team have also kept clean sheets against 3 of the top 5 teams (one of the 5 is us) yet lose goals for fun against the 6th place team... I don't see your point tbh about performances...

Also, it is shocking the result - especially the 6-0, but surprisingly you're not moaning about that! Weird isn't it....

in the nicest possible way your a crap manager then..

The Montreal Impact in CONCACAF Champions League lead 2-0 after the first leg at home earlier this year. They went to went to Mexico for the second leg and were leading 2-1 at halftime in that game, 4-1 on aggregate. Atlante FC came back in the 2nd half scoring 3 goals, including 2 in injury time at the 93rd and 94th minute.

Being from Montreal, that sucked big time and yes, these things do happen...

My club went over to Albania for a Europa Qualification match - lost 1-0, never looked like scoring and looked like fish out of water. In the home leg (not at our own stadium) we won 8-1... results like that happen...

The OP just can't take defeat but happy to take the "unrealistic" wins no problem!

Deportivo - Milan 1-4 and 4-0 (2004)

Champions League quarterfinals. The European champions Milan came to La Coruna leading 4-1 from the first leg against the same Deportivo who had been slaughtered 8-3 to Monaco four months before. The same Deportivo!? Or was it a different Milan from the one everybody knew? Never, never were Milan so impotent and never so thoroughly beaten than on that night at the Riazor.

Werder Bremen- Anderlecht 5-3 (1994)

Champions' League group stage. The comeback specialists (Werder) against the chronic loser (Anderlecht). The Belgians held on to 3-0 until the 66th minute and a win should have been a matter of routine, but the Germans for reasons unknown kept on coming forward. The Kiwi Rufer twice, Hobsch, Bratseth and Bode in the following 23 minutes explained the meaning of the phrase "German spirit". Werder also overturned Spartak Moscow's 1-4 with a 6-2 win in 1987, Dynamo Berlin's 0-3 with a 5-0 in 1988 and Lyon's 0-3 with a 4-0 in 1999. True "never-say-die" stuff.

Barcelona - Atletico Madrid 5-4 (1997)

Spanish Cup quarterfinals. Atletico arrived at Nou Camp with a poor 2-2 draw, but after 45 minutes they had an "unassailable" 3-0 lead. Fifteen minutes into the second half, they still led by 4-2, with four goals by Serb Milinko Pantic. Ronaldo, Figo and Pizzi three minutes before time created the magnificent turnaround, which thrilled the Catalans. The biggest game in Spanish Cup history was won by a Barca even more spectacular than the one that won the 2004-2005 Primera División.

Red Star - Dynamo Berlin 2-5 and 4-1 (1978)

UEFA Cup first round. The East German secret police sponsored team came to Belgrade in high spirits after a resounding 5-2 win in the first leg. Then their top-scorer Riediger made it 6-2 on aggregate before half time. Nothing special: the stopper-come-forward Zdravko Borovnica shocked Dynamo with two goals in the second half, Dusan Savic added one, and Milos Sestic nailed the decider in the 90th minute for Red Star's biggest comeback in Europe.

Real Madrid - Anderlecht 0:3 and 6:1 (1984)

UEFA Cup third round. Anderlecht were a better team, and highly fancied after a 3-0 win in Brussels. But, Madrid was about to witness the rise of Quinta del Buitre, Vulture Squad, lead by Emilio "El Buitre" (Vulture) Butragueno. The current Real Madrid vicepresident shone on the night with three goals and the Royals jumped over Anderlecht on the way to the trophy. For Real, comebacks were business as usual.

From 1-4 to 5-1 against Derby County in 1974, from 0-2 to 3-0 against Inter in 1985 and, also against Inter, from 1-3 to 5-1 a year later.

I have had this "bug" many times in the old games, where you could win or lose the first game by alot(where they practically scored on everything), and then it turned around in the next fixture against them - with little rhyme or reason(like changing it around down 4 goals and away from home). However, this has been some versions ago though.

another comeback: Middlesbrough 4-2 Steaua Bucharest (2006 I think it was)

Football is football, anything can happen and we have seen great comebacks in the past.. another one springs to mind is Spurs were leading Man Utd 3:0 at half time and went on to loose 3:4

Was 5-3 iirc.

I stand corrected.. i thought they scored 4 not 5..

i found few more results which is interesting:

so these types of matches are not unheard of.

FM07 - I welcomed Barcelona to the Allianz Arena in the last 8 of Europe. Lost 5-0 at home, Won 6-1 at the Nou Camp. With 5 goals coming after the 70th minute purely because I went for all out attack (Makaay, S.Cruz and Pizzaro upfront). Win on away goals.

It works both ways and it's down to tactics.

Also by the way it's a recurring theme for you. You have what you think is a comphy lead, so you rest people by any chance? Throw a few reserves on?

If you can, replay the game with a different tactics (maybe containment, less offensive with more counter). If you still lose no matter what tactics you used, you may want to report as a potential bug.

It happens in the previous version for super comeback (no matter how I changed my tactics)

Btw, I temporary give up FM since 07 ;) - unless someone convinced me that FM 2010 is a better version

losing 6-0 on return leg of 5-0 sounds crazy. It is possible but probability must be extremely low irl. and for the ones who just blame the OP for the result; In my current career(FM09) season 9; Champions League semi final two AI teams Real Madrid and Atletica Madrid played against each other on semi final, Atl. Madrid has been very good for the last 3 seasons

first leg;

Atl: 6

Real: 1

second leg;

Real: 7

Atl : 1

these are AI teams with top class managers and players so blaming ridicilous tactics is out of question and still the both results are crazy. Atletico beating Real with 6 goals was hard to believe but losing with 7 goals in return leg after couple of weeks is in my opinion very close to impossible.

You have to look at the team you are playing.

Are they beasts at home?

Do they come back well from losses? Or do they go into a slump of form?

Why can't they do to you do what you did to them?

Its all about analysing your opponents see there weaknesses, compare the teams from this time compared to last time you versed them. Its what a manager does, so should you.

congrats on finding examples of results that have happened over the course of 30 years for diff teams. Understand the fact people that in reality this the results he suggests are unlikely to happen in every single round he plays in regardless of if he is a crap manager or not - if he is rubbish, why has he won 5-0 in the first place. To me it appears to be an error rather than reality as you just all seem to think. After all, footy manager isnt reality and is merely a computer program, and as we cna see there are plenty of faults within the game currently.....

I believe if team X lost 5 0 away, the only thing their manager will do for second leg is to rest key players and give some playing time to reserves.

Strachans first game at Celtic didn't they lose 5-0 to some random european side and then very very nearly claw it back in the second leg?

yeah but not nearly enough I think.

But to the OP things like this happens, Football is a game of two halves. Or in your case too legs. You team simple where not good enough in the 2nd leg. Obv the opposition would set out to attack after you beat them in the first leg.

i think hes right,

"Brave Celtic fell just short of creating European football history as they exited the Champions League despite a four-goal win over Artmedia.

They had to become the first side to ever progress after a 5-0 first-leg defeat but went out on aggregate."

Thats from the bbc report on the 2nd lef of the game

Fair enough. There have been some examples of teams needing to and scoring 5 times to win a game but none of 6. This is definately an extreme example, but I haven't been seeing this with anything like such regularity as the original poster describes. Perhaps you have a very open tactic that leaves the possibility for overwhelming a team as you did in the first leg, but also one that leaves lots of holes as you found out in the second leg. Complacency is also an issue.

there was a massive problem in fm09 with teams turning round big deficits in the second leg. was to do with teamtalks being overly effective, as far as i know. i'm guessing it's not been fixed for fm10

don't know why people would want to defend something that clearly needs fixing in the game. it's not even a case of sour grapes, in fm09 i overturned big leads about as often as i had them overturned on me, and either way it felt a bit stupid

To the OP:

Do you change your team's menatlity and/or tactics when away as opposed to home? Do you use touchline shouts?

If the answer to these is no, I would suggest doing it. At home I almost always play attacking, whereas away I play counter-attacking. I personally don't change my formation though. I will say that my team doesn't do as well away, but I don't have many major problems.

In my 07 game i had the same thing with Porto although i intentionally played all crap players (because for some reason winning the national league and Europa league gets you play in the Europa league again and not in CL) , lost 0-4 away , won 5-0 at home and had to reload and play a striker as Gk .

It's a freak occurance. Don't see what the fuss is about. A computer game will never reflect real life. Probably as simple as the "motivation" code being too high for the opposition, while the human user's players were over-confident, meaning the opposition's players were more determined, more committed, on top of their regular attributes, while the human user's players had an off-day.

It's extreme, but not impossible. Perhaps a PKM uploaded to the FTP will allow SI to see if certain codes were skewed, or if it was the user giving a poor team talk + not changing tactics when 2-0 down + a bunch of other things that could have been avoided. If the code is at fault I'm sure they'll fix it for patch 2.
