New Feature idea: Expanding Manager Personality / Player signing interviews

Whilst watching "The Damned United" earlier it gave me some idea's about perhaps increasing the role of personality of the managers and also the addition of "key staff".

Very Early champ managers offered the chance to pick arrogant, confident, thoughtful etc from a list to determine manager personality and i thought it might be nice to be able to determine what sort of manager we are at the start of the game rather than (often inaccurate) current profiles and then have this linked into player preferences.

Examples being:

Detail Orientated - Rafa Benitez

Passionate/Motivator - Redknapp/O'Neill

Hard liner - Souness

Defensive minded Coach

Attack minded Coach

Skill based teams - Wenger/Guardiola

Power based teams - Allardyce

Scrappy teams - Pulis

Guru style?

Promotion specialist - perhaps an earnt badge?

Saving Relegation Specialist? - see above

European Specialist - see above, e.g. benitez could be classed as this?

etc etc

Perhaps be like Player Preferred moves or something, but the idea that you could build from say a choice of 3? and then perhaps certain players prefer different styles or you could be more likely to aquire a skillful Spaniard if your a skill orientated attacking manager but equally getting that no nonsense hard tackling centre mid then you would have more success to be a scrappy power based manager.

This could then be linked into a new "interview" screen with new signings stating how you see them fitting into the team/squad (depending on offering) with the role they are asked to perform. for example you could have a hard powerful team but want a creative forward to bring an unpredicable nature to the team, in the interview you would reassure the player he would be given playmaker responsibility as well as a certain level of creative freedom despite you being a manager without that reputation, think Allardyce getting Okocha and Djorkaeff. or equally makelele's role at real madrid to be the enforcer to protect all the fancy players.

I think this would add a great new dimension to the game and perhaps a feature that could look to be build into FM2011. I always imagine myself as a certain type of manager for each save I have and it would be great to translate that into a more complete profile with then the game reacting to that both in new player signings and also perhaps meetings with current players when you take over or when you wish to change their roles within the team or upon appointing them captain. Basically this is all an extension to current idea's within the game and increasing player/manager interaction.

The other idea for "key staff" came from a line in the film where the leeds chairman said "we should never have hired you without peter taylor" perhaps if you had success at a couple of clubs with the same backroom team or assistant then it would help you to get higher profile positions if you came as a team, or your assistants reputation could help/hinder you? This is a less developed idea but struck me as interesting for those of us who like to mould our assistants with us throughout the game as I do.

Any thoughts most welcome.

(Could a mod change "new feature idea" to [suggestion] as I have now seen that is the format for new ideas :) thanks)

I like the ideas about manager's personality, and this should have a greater bearing on the game. Another thread talked about the managers role in aquiring players, in terms of other ways of attracting players other than wages and reputation. E.g. plans for the future, where the player would play etc. So I think that the mangers personality/interaction with players/managers/chairman can be improved and have more influence in the game and thus incorporate these managerial aspects as it seems that the managers screen rarely differs from manager to manager when in fact there is so much difference. Yeah good idea, I think needs work in terms of the finished article but I think it has the potential!

Thanks Nev, didnt see that other thread but it seems to have a similar idea to bring more interaction into the game which for my part is great, I think the more the manager gets involved with the player to sign, motivate, tactically advice the better. How great would it be to sign an older player for a talented young team and tell him you wanted him to use his experience to help the team, you were making him captain for this reason but wanted him to help blood the young star CM as his vice captain to take over in 2 years time. Or to say to a new flashy winger that you want him to be the lifeblood of the team and to try to wreak havoc and that you put all your trust in him to invigorate the team... etc etc Would add a whole other level for me (mainly as I think this stuff anyway when I make said purchases and simply hope the AI understands what im thinking selecting a 20yr old as vice captain and when I completely rewrite my mainstay tactic for 5 seasons to accomodate said winger...)

Yeah sounds good. I like idea of for example stating your intentions for players in both the long and short term. E.g. You have a few good young players and say to them that they are going to be the life and soul over the next 10 + years and build a rapport/team chemistry and when buying a young player this can be applied, by saying you have bought this player to be the long term replacement of a player and to learn from him and to be patiene because his time will come. (I like the tutoring idea, but you assign the perfect tutor for a youngster, and then thats it nothing really happens!) And try and get that youngster to get the traits of the more experienced player, similar to what you said about the young CM to take over the mantle.

Like in real life to get a player to come through the youth system and see him develop and become a world class player. It seems from my experiences that the youngsters that get promoted to the under 18's never improve even with the best nurturing e.g. training, tutoring, out on loan, first team experience they never seem to improve and I end off having to release them when they are like 22 and not good enough. I'm going off a tangent here but the youth system and training needs a total revamp- there seems no logic or progression with it. I would love to do an 'arsenal' but it is impossible to do it in the game. It seems that you can just look for a decent youngster wait untill their like 22 then snap them up for a high fee and place them in the team, and keep doing this process over and over again.

Theres no feel to the process if that make senses. The interaction of stomping your authority onto the club in all aspects of the game a more 'hands on approach', more dialogue between all parties to create a sense of realism. :)
