Serious Viral Infection

Recommended Posts

Ex-Watford midfielder Dominic Blizzard had Epstein-Barr virus that kept him out for over a year.

true, it delayed his move to us from Watford, before he decided he didn't want to play for us, and then changed his mind again. Two years later, he changed his mind again, and started feigning injury so he didn't have to play.

Good luck with the **** Bristol Rovers

Just thank your lucky stars it wasn't the AIDS virus or something. Maybe such viruses/diseases should be incorporated into FM to make it more realistic. Not that you ever hear of any footballers contracting HIV or AIDS but it is a possibility and would hardly be unrealistic if it happened every once in a blue moon in the game.

I've often thought that there isnt enough of this kind of thing in the FM world, bizarre events that maybe only happen once in a thousand hours of gameplay but do still happens. Sounds twisted saying I'd like to see players die, but tragically it does happen in real life and so it should happen in FM if it wants to be realistic. Also what about drugs bans, attacks on referees, mass brawls on the pitch, players in the same team fighting each other (whether in a match or in training), fans rioting at derby games, pitch invasions etc etc.

These things happen in real life. But never in FM, and I just think it would help the FM world feel a little more involving and organic if they did.

One of my players is suffering from a serious viral infection and is out for 8 MONTHS.

What sort of infection keeps a player out for such a long time and is this right?!

A virus can be almost anything from a simple cold or flu to the much more serious and potentially life threatening like AIDS or Ebola and as such the length of time that a person is out with this virus can vary considerably. I got this from doing a search on google

Examples of common human diseases caused by viruses include the Common Cold, influenza, Chickenpox and Cold Sores. Many serious diseases such as Ebola, AIDS, Avian Influenza and SARS are caused by viruses. The relative ability of viruses to cause disease is described in terms of virulence. Other diseases are under investigation as to whether they too have a virus as the causative agent, such as the possible connection between human Herpes Virus Six (HHV6) and neurological diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis.

Viruses have different mechanisms by which they produce disease in an organism, which largely depends on the viral species. Mechanisms at the cellular level primarily include cell lysis, the breaking open and subsequent death of the cell. In multicellular organisms, if enough cells die the whole organism will start to suffer the effects. Although viruses cause disruption of healthy homeostasis, resulting in disease, they may exist relatively harmlessly within an organism. An example would include the ability of the herpes virus, which cause cold sores, to remain in a dormant state within the human body. This is called latency and is a characteristic of the all herpes viruses including the Epstein-Barr virus, which causes glandular fever, and the varicella zoster virus, which causes chicken pox. The large majority of people have been infected with at least one of these types of herpes virus. However, these latent viruses might sometimes be beneficial, as the presence of the virus can increase immunity against bacterial pathogens, such as Yersinia Pestis. On the other hand, latent chickenpox infections return in later life as the disease called Shingles.

Some viruses can cause life-long or chronic infections, where the viruses continue to replicate in the body despite the hosts' defence mechanisms. This is common in hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus infections. People chronically infected are known as carriers, as they serve as reservoirs of infectious virus. In populations with a high proportion of carriers, the disease is said to be. In contrast to acute lytic viral infections this persistence implies compatible interactions with the host organism. Persistent viruses may even broaden the evolutionary potential of host species.

I think the reason that the game uses the rather vague expression 'Viral Infection' rather than specifically mentioning an actual disease is probably down to legal issues. After all it wouldnt do SI any good if their game started suggesting that a well known famous player had something serious like Multiple Sclerosis or AIDS would it.

It's only a game, why would you want this sort of thing in there? There was a thread about players dying yesterday, the moderators confirmed this would not be incorporated into the game for legal reasons.

I'm glad that FM isn't half as depressing as watching real football can be, to be quite honest. Just think about Brice Taton recently. You don't want that happening in a game... At least not this sort of game.

Here's a stupid one: Mathieu Flamini hit by viral infection. Advised that "the only course of action was to see a specialist".

Options:

Send to specialist: out for 7 to 8 months

Send home: out for 6 to 7 months

Why would I send him to a specialist then when mama can do better?
