Marc Vaughan has stated in the past that the assistants are set to pick a "decent" squad but not necessarily the best squad you could make from your available players... If you find the assistant's picks to perform better than your own than you need to chalk that up to your own inadequacies as a coach, not to some special trick. When I first started playing FM the assistant was a great help, and even now I still always use the assistant when I move to a new club, or after receiving a large influx of new talent. I never completely agree with the assistant's choices, but I use him as a kind of sounding board and compare his 11 against my 11, and then look at places we disagreed and try and figure out why.
