I have so much I want to say. But I summarised so it won't be too long. I am posting to give comments on the general game play. I've really enjoyed everything the game offered. But there is room for improvement. In Summarising I am forced to leave out bits which are essential. But I have to cut down the post.

It's been nearly a second job getting to 100 years of age. I nearly retired at 70 odd but my brother convinced me not to. I've had 3 stadiums named after me – all called the Tyson Stadium or Tyson Arena – inventive. They could even make a stadium and put a statute outside it or something.

So here I am. 100 years old. Manager of the most successful team in Italy. I've also taken Atletico Madrid and Arsenal to the top of the world. And in the middle of that I got Kidderminster Harriers to a new level. I've managed interantionally and won the World Cup, European Cup and Conferadtions Cup etc. I've done it all. Won every competition at the highest level. As I'm sure a lot of you have.

Here's my experience so far – in short:

For starters I did use FM Genii Scout. I think it's only fair. I looked up playesr my Scouts referred and I got the Scouts from the FM Scout – so I think my Scouts should have recommended the better players. Aside from the obvious, some of the players were very bad.

As a Football Manager you should be able to see potential in players, based on experience. So if you have a track record of signing good young players it should boost your ability to see good in players. At the moment you're signing players based on bad scout advice. You have no clue if they will be good or not. You could be signing someone who is only good enough for League 1 or something. Your FM experience should boost your ability to see potentially good players.

I think the Scouting is much better than before. But I think there should be some way, as a Manager, to see potential in players. At the moment you're buying basically blind.

What would perhaps be a nice idea would be some chart like they have for Fantasy Footabll where they give points to players. Goalkeepers get points for clean sheets and 3 saves and stuff. Every position has points associated, assists, goals, yellow/red cards (deduction), Man of the Match points etc. If this info was available you would be able to look up the players in the leauge or lower leauges who have performed well based on a points system.

And in fairness that is a good way to see who the best players in the leauge are. It would make the game fairer in the sense that other computer managers don't get all the best players etc.

Just something I think the game could do with. You're meant to be a football manager.

Best Original Players

Henri Saviet, Carlos Vela, Mahmdo Sakho, Jack Wilshire, Theo Walcott, Sergio Aguero.

Saviet required additional training in beating the offside trap. He didn't become good until around 21 or 22 years of age. But was played every game anyway.

Sahko is the best defender in the original game. He became captain quick enough and is quite loyal. He's very young in the start of the game but he is the best. Play him as soon as you buy him. At around 23 you can make him your captain.

There aren't any other players that stand out from the start of the game.

International Management

I managed many international teams. I won the World Cup and European Championships. But I was never once offered or made alert of the Irish Footaball job. I am Irish and a very successful manager. At 100 years of age I did get a message about the Irish job being available, but still I would prefer to be offered the job more often.

Also the Manager picks the team and the players right. But I doubt they create the shortlist themselves. But you should be able to say "Pick the top international players from the Top Clubs" or something. Or if you have a friendly match you should get feedback from your Assistant on Players that could be picked. Like Under 21 players who are doing well.

Friendlies are a chance to experiment. It's a small thing and I'm probably not doing a good job explaining it

International Players

As the game goes on, I was manager of Mexico, Brazil etc. But as the game progresses the nationalities get less and less. My 3 main nations are England, Spain, Italy and all the best players are from these countries. You do see the odd Estonian and things like that that are great players. But I still think the nationalities of generated players could be mixed more and a lot more even.

Game Play

The game runs quite smoothly. Except the game eats processor power. Makes it difficult to do other tasks while playing the game.

The 3D game is brilliant. I love it. But I would like to see replays revamped. Like if you score from a free kick it could show you the range, speed etc., of the goal. Or a different view or something. At 100 years of age I've not seen enough overhead kicks that resulted in goals. Players in real life are acrobatic and you should see more of this stuff.

Players Careers

At the end of a players career I would like the option to watch his best moments in highlights. So it could include his goal of the month, his assists that resulted in goals of the month, his sending offs, and other things that players are remembered for. Currently a player retires. You can't even give them a Testemonial, which is a huge part of football.

I would also like the opportuinity to interact with a player. When a player wants to leave the club to move on for a new challenge or retire, I would like the opportunity to give them a thank you or to bad mouth them, say thanks or good riddance.

The Media

Not too keen on this bit. I set my assistant to the media. Every game, every time it's the same questions. When I took over international jobs I was constantly asked if I could rise to the challenge. Despite winning the World Cup with various international teams, I found the media questions were stupid. I am already an accomplished manager in the game, very successful. But the questions at international management never change. Bit silly.

I would like a Prefernce to turn media on or off or something. Or else revamp that part to make sense.

I'd also like to arrange media coverage for when I buy a big player for lots of money. I could have PR manager who comes to say they want to reveal the player. That could help boost sales and reputation of the club, even at a lower levels.

Coaches

I battle every season to keep coaches and keep staff. It's stupid. Coaches have no loyalty unless they only recently signed for the club. Other than that they're fair game. The game won't stop with a red light for coaches being nipped under my nose. If I pop off to the toilet while the game progresses I can come back and my best coach is gone. The game should stop so you can offer a better contract. Or the coach should come to you to say he's leaving for a better contract unless you can convince them to stay.

It's stupid that when you hire a coach that they instantly coach 9 positions. When you hire a coach it's for a specific job. Not all 9 of the jobs. They're respective skills should be automatically chanelled to their training. It's so stupid that you have to tell them what to do. What's the Assistant Manager for? Why can't come to you and say "Training isn't going well because we have no Shooting Coach - Mr. A is suited to this position, do you want to Assign them to shooting?" *tick boxes* or something?

Players

When I took over as coach of Juve they had plenty of money. And they weren't doing so well in the league. But I bought them the best players in the game. And sold off the duds. That was grand, went flawlessly. But in January (6 months later) they all wanted to leave for bigger clubs. Even though I was top of the league. It's a bit silly. I understand maybe 1 or 2 but not all 8 or 9 players I bought.

Friendlies

I want a better way to arrange friendlies and things. At the moment you have to invite clubs. It takes days for them to get back to you etc.

I would prefer a way to set up a cup and invite top clubs (basically the highest calibre club you can attract) etc.

The Interface

I hate the way Undo Last is so close to all the other buttons it's so annoying.

When I select a team I should have a save button so that's my team from now on. There's plenty of room on the sidebar to place team saves to select.

I would like a way to mark certain players as definite starters. So say for a cup match against a lower team, I don't really mind what team I play. But I want to give my youngsters a go. So I should be able to mark players to start against lower teams or something. So when i ask my assistant to pick the squad he includes some up and coming players. I know it's football manager and I should be doing it, but at 100 years of age for a computer game it gets tedious.

Contracts

I hate the way you have to offer contracts to staff. It's silly. Any contracts that need to be renewed, you should be given a screen with tick boxes, with any staff that needs renewal. It can't be that hard to give a screen with tick boxes and a wage demand. Tick all boxes or not. It is so annoying having to go to Offer Contract, and so on.

There could easily be a button at the top that brings you to a screen of contracts that are expiring. You can tick all the boxes for staff or something, The button could change colour when you have contracts expiring.

Your assistant manager should also report to you on how well or bad the coaches are doing. So at least you know if you have good scouts.

There is no reason to go to a new screen to offer a contract. When you bid for a player and it's accpeted there's plenty of space there and then to offer a contract etc.

Training

The training is so bad. Not only the Assistant Manager should report to you on the coaches, but they could also definitely do with recommending younger players to play in the first team. But when they do recommend them they should also report on whether they should stay in the first team or not.

You're a manager, not a one man band. You hire staff to be your wing men and give you advice, but you don't see any of it. Not even reports.

If you take a player on Trial you get him for 1 – 4 weeks. But at the end of the trial you're not even given the option to sign the player. You don't get reports from the staff on how well they did or if they will be a good prospect. At the end of the Trial the player just leaves. It's silly.

When team morale is low you should be able to do training team building events etc.

As I said at the start, there is plenty I want to say, but this is a summary. I look forward to questions and opinions on what I've said. I understand the game wants to mimick real life management, but at the end of the day it's a game. It could be better. Some things I've said might take away from the realism, but it's just my opinion and frustration and joy of the game.

The main irk:

Screen Real Estate!!! Pleas for the love of that is good revamp the screen. That Undo Last is in the worst place. There's plenty of space to add in other tools on the side bar.

The Match

Ok Covered some stuff earlier. But why during the match can't I shout instructions at my players? I should be able to click a player and say "defend" "attack" "long shots" "tackle hard" etc. Or tell my team to do basic tactics, like "all out defend" "all out attack" "pass wings" "pass mixed" I shouldn't have to come away from the match screen to imply tactics. I should be able to change formation, so if I have a forward that can play left wing, and a left winger that plays center too I would like to change formation to 4 - 5 - 1 or something and have them use intelligence to move into their positions.

At the moment the players and assistant managers and coaches are a joke. You see in Real matches that when the manager swaps positions or formation the assistant manager pops out to give instructionst to the team.

I definitely want to see check boxes for offering contracts.

OH

And when you put young players available for Loan your Assistant manager should sort them out with a club on loan. I would also like the preference to only loan to clubs who consider them "Valuabel member for the first team" There is no point in sending someone on loan that is going to be cover. I can keep them at my club for cover. That defeats the purpose of going on loan. I should be able to state this in the Loan option.

I should also have a split screen for my Players. On the left my current squad. On the Right I want to see the players up for transfer that I can drag and drop. On the right split screen I want the option to view my Loan players, also a drag and drop. I want a drop down menu for these players that stipulate what type offer I should accept. Like transfer fee, percentage of next sale etc. For loan players I want to say that they only go on loan if they will play regularly. I want the option to recall players that the club isn't fulfilling it's promise.

And I also want to be able to Batch offer players out on loan. You used to be able to do it. But you can't anymore. I want to send players on loan, it's important for their development. It's a huge part of the game and should easier. I think the split screen list is a good idea for loan players. And the assistant should help more in finding clubs for them.

I've been playing football manager since it first came out and I love it.

Ok rants over. I love the game though. And where there's plenty I'd change there's plenty I love too. I just didn't get into the love part too much :p

Overall thumbs up

Looking forward to the next version

KBSC

I want to be able to assign my own Keyboard Shortcuts to get around the program.

Hi DOB is 1980, so I'm going to guess he's in 2080.

Yes it's the year 2080

Sorry to say Norwich are in League 1 in 11th position - September 2080. You'll never have another Jeremy Goss :D

Well I do holiday past the games and let the manager handle the match day. I watch some games. I do pick the team and that. Match day can be so boring.

After watching every match for 20 seasons I just started holidaying for match day.

As for the KBSC - you can assign shortcuts to various things. But you can't make up your own short cut. For example, you can't add a shortcut to go on holiday for a day. I use a lot of professional design programs, like InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator and you can add any shortcut for virtually every command of the program. That's what I'm looking for.

Using shortcuts really speeds up the time it takes to get around the program. Especially the poor layout that's available. The icons aren't helpful, even after about a year playing the game solid the icons still confuse me.

It's one hell of a game. After I finally got the Ireland job I beat Slovakia 3 - 1 away in my first game. Hurrah.

I can't believe the game lets you get to 100 years of age and above.

But there is a small problem now. When I go to sign a player the Contract Length is automatically set to

Jan 1900 - which is 180 years ago. But I can manually change it to Jan 2083 or 84. I don't know if the problem will last.

I plan to continue into the year 2100.

I'll post more screen shots then too.

I've been playing all week to get past 10 seasons, trying to get to 100 years of age. It was tiresome, but well worth it :D

I doubt they'll put macros in the game as very very little people will use it.

Quite a lot of the things that you want to do, you can.

You can assign specific coaches to training schedules: Squad->Training - Senior/Youth->Coaches then select a specific coach and there are tick boxes on the right.

You can create shortcuts: Options->Preferences->Shortcuts then pick the thing you wish to assign a shortcut to and click Add New in the bottom right and press the key combination you want as a shortcut.

You can't 'batch offer players out on loan' as such but if you have a feeder club, you can select multiple players and move them to the affiliated club.

I agree with your views on the media, friendlies and player retirements being tedious and adding nothing to the game. There's so much they could do with retirements such as testimonies like you mentioned and in my opinion, press conferences could be scrapped altogether for all I care. It's too hard to set up friendly competitions at the minute as there is always one club at least that isn't willing to do it, no matter what you offer them.

Link to post

Yeh I know how to setup the training. But my point is you hiring staff for specific jobs. I spend way too much time hiring coaches and setting up training schedules. It's a small complaint, but there are things that everyone wants changed, and it's just one of the things I think could be revamped somehow.

I don't like the Keyboard shortcut options. They're ok, but I want more control over them. I'm not sure if it's feasible to make a macro or not. But it would add to the game for people that like using KBSC, I can't be the only one :D

Totally agree about friendlies. It should be far easier to do friendlies. Just go to match schedules, ask assistant to arrange a friendly cup and invite top clubs. That's all you should have to do.

I doubt Alex Ferguson, Benitez or others actually make the calls themselves to set up friendlies.

I would like a way to boost moral. Sometimes players get unhappy because of "Lack of Harmony" and you just have to sit it out. You should be able to do team building exercises to build moral and things.

I do have feeder clubs. But the stupidest thing happens. Say if I have players that need to get a work permit. So I get a club in Belgium. Half way through the season, sometimes, the Board cancel the link to the club. You get the player back from loan, no work permit and you can't get another club until the next season.

I do think the Board should be sorting out feeder and parent clubs and coming to you with options. Currently you have to go to the Board. It seems a bit backwards to me.

Yeh some of the players are there. Although I can't click the names as they've retired.

I have to say, Carlos Vela at the start of the game is brilliant. He had something like 138 caps for Mexico and 145 goals or something.

Vela is in the Overall best XI for Atletico Madrid - where I signed him

He got 55 goals one season. When he played up front. But I moved him out to left wing because I had got Paul Wheeldon and Bojan in.

I'm surprised Sahko didn't make the overall best xi?

Most players in the Best XI are players I signed.

Vela is incredible. He set that record and it hasn't been broken!

Here's the Arsenal Records

All those players are ones I signed apart from George.

Ruben was brilliant as was Everton. Best players in the game at the time. But Vela, Saviet, Aguero, Bojan, Wallcot was the best strike force ever.

Eugene my friend you're an inspiration, I am currently in the year 2024 nothing compared to you but I too hope i can get to 2100.

Great points in the first post which i completely agree with SI need to start catering to the needs of us longtime football managers.

I hope SI are reading this. Keep up the good work mate, oh and by the way what part of Ireland are you from? I have friends and family from Kildare.

How long do you spend on holiday each time?

Also, while you're on holiday for a match does it select the tactics that you chose before you went on holiday.

I just go for match day. You can set in the options for the holiday that your Assistant use current tactics and selection where possible. It's good because he'll swap out injured players etc. and use the reserves and youth team to fill up slots for subs too.

Got to love the Island Graphic too - that's great!!! I really like it.

It's been fun getting this far. I used to play up to around 2024 - 2030 etc. but I got bored of buying the same players over and over. The beginning of the game became very easy. So instead of starting a new game each time I just kept going.

I got bored managing in the same league and winning. So every time I got a new stadium named after me I would leave the following year for a new club.

Also getting the clubs financially rich was fun too. I got Arsenal and At. Madrid close to 2bn, but I'm going to get Juventus up to 2bn.

It would be cool if SI read this. I want nothing more than an even better version come November :D All in all though I just wanted to show the SI community you can get to 100 years of age. I love playing this game. And I just wanted to share my experience.

I'm from Dublin. I don't know people in Kildare. But it's only about an hours drive from here.

Cool, I myself managed Stockport County from the english League 1 to the premiership and won many many cups on the way and spent over 5000 days with them but left for roma after I got annoyed because I wasnt listed as a legend for the club.

There is actually 1 thing that I would like to see. And it's very controversial, so it probably won't be for everyone.

But I was thinking it would good that when you retire you could invest your earnings in a club of your choice.

So if you create a new manager, within the same game, as you can, you have that money available for that club.

I'm not saying it's a perfect idea. Or that I've thought it through or anything like that. But then you can keep on playing as a new manager at a new club that has additional wealth.

So I could invest my €905m that I've earned in my beloved Leeds United and take over them as a new manager and have that money. Perhaps for a new stadium, some transfer money, pay off debts, attract better players etc.

It would be something to do with your earnings.

Just an idea.

Well I was thinking only Human players could do it. It would be mental if all the managers in the world invested all their money in a club.

I feel there's room for it in the game. After all the real players retire you're left with fictional characters, so what's the harm in having a bit of fun play where you can invest your earnings and continue on, if you want to.

Great post mate and welcome to the forums.

You mention about shouting to your players in the match well if I'm right you should be able to come FM10.

Currently in FML it was introduced in the new 1.2 update which had a new tactical wizard which will be in FM10. During the game you can "shout" at players with several drop down menus which is all very quick to use and can be game changing when you need it most.

Such as play wider, hassle opponents etc. you can change your players roles mid match as well like if you take off your tall CF and bring on your speedy ST you can make the ST have say a poachers role on the fly with out going into the tactics page so you never leave the match.

I hope I've explained that ok for you. :)

I personally think it is a good idea but i doubt SI will put it in anytime soon, as they can only do so many changes per game for example with the fifa franchise the only usually make about 250 major changes every year.

Cool thanks for the update. I don't play FML. Yeh it's a good thing to have. It would make watching the match better and give you more things to do. So you'll actually watch the game rather than holiday for it.

Excellent I hope it's in FM10. I know the guys do a great job when it comes to new editions of the game. They really are super. But no matter how good they make it we'll always want it better :D

I personally think it is a good idea but i doubt SI will put it in anytime soon, as they can only do so many changes per game for example with the fifa franchise the only usually make about 250 major changes every year.

That makes sense. I understand they only get about a 9 months get the new version out. As well as getting all the fixes together, patches and updates for the game. It's understandable they can only do so much.

I really hope the revise the use of Screen Real Estate though. You really don't need a new screen for about 99% of all things in the game. Playing on a laptop most of the time, it's not fun navigating with the track pad.

A few check boxes for new contracts, and a few things moved to the main screen, like a transfer bid accepted, let me offer the contract in that window. I just find a lot of time is wasted going screen to screen.

Same goes for shortcuts. Being a graphic desginer I use kbsc all the time. It speeds up my productivity by about 500% - no joke, that's a real figure. I barely use the mouse except when drawing. I specialise in page layout and long documents, so I'm mostly keyborad orientated. And I guess that's why I'm irked by the Screen Real Estate, being a page layout guy . It's laid out nicely, but it's not efficient.

I can agree about the laptop track pad I bought a USB optical mouse to solve that problem although I shouldn't of needed to.

Just a thought you should really try and email SI or Miles Jacobson (lead designer I think) about all these suggestions because it would be a real shame to let all these ideas go to waste.

Cheers guys.

Can't use mouse sitting on couch drinking beers playing FM :D Seriously can't use mouse while lounging on the couch. I don't use the track pad getting around the internet. No need to. :D

Sure if they don't see the post I might email them with a link to the post.

It's the first day it's been up here so I'll wait for a week and see what happens. It's a Sunday after all.

I'd be delighted to offer more suggestions. And I know some of my suggestions are unrealistic in the short term, but possible for long term and some are just not realistic or practical at all, but just ideas.

can someone tell me what the following actually mean and how i can get it to go up rather than down all the time :) ..

Club/Player Loyalty ?

Domestic Player Bias ?

Hands On Approach ?

If Club/Player loyalty is what i think it is which is staying at the same club while rejecting other job offers and keeping the same players and not selling a lot or buying then if i just rejected a job offer from Valencia and 2 Media rumours saying i was about to take over at Getafe and somewhere else then why did it not go up  ?

Help appreciated ;)

I'm not quite sure how it works or when it goes up or down.

Club/Player loyalty I suppose is if you keep a player for a few seasons. And Club loyalty is being at a club like I was for about 20 years.

Domestic Player Bias would be if you are signing players from that nation. So if you are managing in Brazil and you sign Mexican and Argentina players rather than Brazil players, then you'll have a low Domestic Player Bias rating. If you are signing players that are Brazilian then you'll have a high Domestic Player Bias rating.

Hands on approach I think has to do with dealing with media and dealing with match day and actually managing on match day. I have a low rating on this because I holiday for match day and I send my assistant to any media coverage.

I don't feel these are esential stats to be a good manager. Who cares if you bias domestic players? As long as you're winning it's all that counts.

That was a truly epic first post!

What dedication. I don't know if I'm impressed or frightened. That many hours... you sound like you could do QC for SI and still make it to 2050 in FM10. Good luck with your new goals.

Seriously, the amount of times I nearly quit is not funny. It wasn't easy to keep going. As I said earlier I pulled all nighters this week just to get to 100 years of age. I think I go through about 5 seasons in a week !

I'm not that die hard about computer games. But I love FM.

If it was easy everyone would have done it :D :D

Great post and welcome to the forums  Enjoyed reading your opinions and have to agree with most of them, especially points regarding long term games. That's the way i like to play and i feel that one season to the next is just disconnected from each other. It would be nice to get the feeling that you have actually built up a career, players have built up a career with testimonial's etc.

I too use a lot of professional software like photoshop, illustrator etc and feel that incorporating the interface e.g. short cuts, etc, would make life much more easier when navigating.

Oh...and well done on reaching 100  I'm currently 51 on my current save...long way to go yet :(

Well my brother sent me the badges. I'm not sure where exactly to get them. They're cool though. I hope that link provided by someone else there helps.

Yes, you can start with an international background.

And thanks for all the shout outs on reaching 100 :D Happy to see my opinions on game play are shared too :D

I like managing England, Italy and Spain. For me they're the best leagues. In a previous game I did manage only South American teams. And I do a game before where I only managed in Japan, China, Australia.

In this game it's England, Ireland, Italy, Spain are all manageable. I have other leauges running, but I don't think I can manage in them? I don't know I've never tried them
