Claudio out, Woodward in!

There was chaos in Turin this week as news filtered out that Claudio Ranieri had been replaced as manager by Norwegian first-timer Jason Woodward. In a statement from Delle Alpi, the chairman Giovanni Gigli had this to say:

“We felt we needed a change if we were to close the gap on Inter Milan. We have brought in Jason as he is a very talented young manager destined for great things. If we hadn’t appointed him, it was only a matter of time before someone else did.”

Jason Woodward was more than accomodating for our questions and revealed he was hoping to bring back the success the club had been looking for after the last few years of obscurity.

“I am delighted to be here, and plan to take this club back to where it belongs, the best in Italy and the best in Europe. People shouldn’t be suprised if I make player changes in the near future but all changes will be for the benefit of the club.”

Juventus fans have suffered through a few ups and downs in recent weeks, especially on the transfer front. There were some raised eyebrows on seeing the first few acquisitions made by Woodward as he bought six youngsters as his first signings. The players in question were Eric Polten, Alberto Franco, Vincenzo Fiorillo, Funso Ojo, Franco Zuculini and Ariel Borysiuk.

There was despair as well as the new boss sold several fan favourites.

Vincenzo Iaquinta, Mauro Camoranesi and David Trezeguet were the main and most shocking departures as Iaquinta went to Sunderland for £7.5m, Camoranesi signed for Real Madrid in an £11m deal and David Trezeguet went home to France in signing for Lyon for £12m. Also departing was Tiago to Aston Villa for £8m and Zdenek Grygera for £6m to Newcastle.

Jason Woodward pleaded with the fans for patience and promised that there would soon be new players wearing the famous black and white kit. He followed through on his promise with the signings of Vagner Love for £15m, Joao Moutinho for £10.25m, Chinedu Obasi for £14.5m, Mamadou Sakho for £8m and also snatched golden oldie David Beckham from under the noses of rivals AC Milan for £4.9m.
