The Béla Guttmann Challenge

Recommended Posts

Not many people know about Béla Guttmann. To me, he was and still is one of the best managers ever. He managed a staggering 23 clubs, including Benfica and AC milan and the Austria National team (the 23 includes 2 spells at Porto and Benfica). He was, and still is the only man to win a European competition with Benfica. He was famously sacked whilst top of the table with A.C Milan. But, more importantly, his most striking feature is that he never stayed at a club for more than 3 seasons. He and Victor Maslov defined the cult of the manager, changed them from the person carrying the bags to training to the tactical geniuses who oversaw every victory.

I concentrate on Guttmann because I think he is the personification of many people's careers on Football Manager. Therefore, this is the layout of your challenge:

Step One-start in your neighbour's country

You may select any nationality you like, but you must begin your career in your neighbour's country. Guttmann's was in Austria with Hakoah Wien (himself being Hungarian) and therefore any country that border's yours is fair game. You MUST not stay here for more than three seasons.

Step two- Roam across Europe

Now, you must select five more countries' teams to manage, but no more than 3 seasons for each. Competitions=points, so as much success as possible with these 5 clubs will be paramount to the bulk of your success.

step three-Into a foreign continent

The ideal choice would be South America, but your job is to manage two clubs from any continent, staying for no more than three seasons at these clubs.

Step four-managing Benfica

You must then take over Benfica. As Guttmann's crowning achievment here was winning the European competition (twice actually) you can stay for more than three seasons, but once European success is achieved and three seasons pass, you must move on from them.

Step five-Porto now

you must then take over rivals Porto, but for no longer than three seasons.

Step six-finally, internationals

Guttmann took over Austria, but any country from Europe is fair game here. You may stay for the world cup and a continental competition, but no more than this.
