What ingredients make a good team?

The concept: I will replace all 12 teams in the Scottish Clydesdale Bank Premier League with custom teams.

Notes: In the Clydesdale Premier League the bottom side is relegated, so to try and avoid this being a team from a participant, the 12th team (colourfully named 'Whipping Boys') will have fairly deflated stats (slightly less than Level 6 in each category) and are favourites for relegation. (Although they are not certainties for relegation).

(The original 12 Clydesdale Premier League teams have been filtered into the English Championship.)

(The Clydesdale Bank Premier League Reputation has been increased by 1 to 14)

(The top Scottish First Division teams have been weakened slightly)

(The Scottish First Division Reputation has been reduced by 1 to 7)

Their are 9 spots available, after myself, denther (who requested a slot in the idea forum) and the weakened team. Each participant will rate 6 crucial club elements, in order from 1 to 6 (1 being most important), this will form the starting point for each team.

Hopefully we'll have a large range of combinations from participants. I have already picked my team setup, and have gone with Stadium Size / Average Attendance as my priority, to give the club long term stability. I can definately see Club Reputaion & Squad Ability topping other peoples list. I have gone with Initial Bank Balance as my 6th choice, in the hope that my Attendance will provide a decent turnover.

All of the teams will be based in a City with an attractiveness of 10. 6 cities have been used, 2 teams from each city.

No team will be in Europe in the first season.

I politely request patience after the sign-up period, to allow me to setup the database, which could realistically take over a week to be done right. After which I will do regular updates. I would like to have the Updates thread up and running by Sunday, but if there are database problems, I will keep you informed.

Maybe that is a consideration for another time. I think qualifying for Europe could be pretty crucial. And don't rule out Whipping Boys, they haven't been created as complete pushovers.

Hi Jody!

I think this is a really good idea. But when I read it I thought, damn!

I have been running this experiment for a few days now, and I planned on expanding the experiment to include similar factors to yours. My DB crashed, and I thought of restarting with 6 teams instead of 3.

The difference with mine is that it isn't going to be a sign up, and I also plan on making my anomalous factors in the extreme. For example, to test extreme reputation, I would set a team to 10,000.

I hope that the two experiments can run concurrently, and that they are both different, as yours is a sign up, and mine is not!

Good Luck! Daemon.

I intended to Private Message you Daemon. Presumably I got distracted and didn't hit send. I'm certain both can run at the same time, and it wasn't my intention to steal your idea.

It wasn't my intention to suggest that you were doing that :)

I'm looking forwards to both experiments!

I have all the details, and will begin work on the database. I'll give you an update when I know more.

Blanco: You currently have two 4's and no 5.

If you change your team details from now, please advise me in a new post, as I have copied all the data onto another source.

Database Update: The squads have been built, and put together. This is as far as I'll go tonight as my eyes are getting sore.

I will give it another stability run overnight.

I will try and fill in the other details tomorrow.

Link to post

Database Update: The database is complete to the detail specified in the sign-up.

I have added loyal chairman with identical 'typical' stats to all 12 clubs. This was due to many teams having a board takeover early in the season, which could adversely affect results.

Most of the created players are British or Irish, with a majority of Scottish and then English. Each team has one player from another EU Nation (Whipping Boys have an Argentinian), the primary reasons for this were to try and add some realism, and to give me a little more enjoyment when coming up with 121 Player Names.

I will run the current database overnight to check long term stability, the previous test ran to 2017 before I cut it short. The last thing we would want is to really get going and the game corrupt after 1 season. If all goes well, I intend to start the new thread on Friday night UK time, with initial squad screenshots, news of any youth team gems (via genie scout), all of the summer transfer window news, and the league table up to 1st September.

I am running a Large database with the following selections:

Scotland: All Available, with SPL and Cups in 'Full Detail'.

England: Coca Cola League 2 (View Only)

Spain: Top 2 Leagues (View Only)

Italy: Top 2 Leagues (View Only)

Ireland: Top 2 Leagues (View Only)

N. Ireland: All 3 Leagues (View Only)

Wales: (View Only)

I also have retain_players_by_gillsmin and team_holland selected.

Edit: 16 games into the opening test season, my team is top of the League. Fingers crossed for the real thing, eh? - lol.

I'm running the finished database overnight as a final check for stability. If this is successful, I guarentee that the first update will be up tomorrow night when I have finished work (Expect it by 7pm UK time). I do have access to the internet at work, which is why you may see me post in other topics, but I cannot view photobucket images from my work pc, as they are blocked. Nor do I have access to my copy of FM09.

I'm really annoyed at myself. I had saved the game at 1st September, and had already written the update. I was going to reload it to that point. But I forgot to turn off 5 game auto save. It has saved over that point (Obviously events won't be the same). 5000 Characters of gold has been wasted :-(

Edit: I'll post it, because it's a shame to waste the effort. But I'll have to start again from an earlier save which was the day of the League Cup 2nd Round. So some teams may have a reprieve

3rd September 2008: Cup Shocks, Spending Power & Smiling for the Camera.

League and Cup update

League Standings

The first four league matches of a season may not reveal too much about your teams fortunes for the coming year, but it is always nice to be at the right end of the table at the start. My team Flint City sit top of the table after an opening day win against Whipping Boys was followed with Wins against Domination United & New Bloc FC, these two results coming either side of a 0-0 draw with F.C Holtaskóli. With our next fixture coming against the 'Squad Level 6' Clydebank Cobras, I have to feel pretty good so far.

After just two games, 'Squad Level 1' Horden All Stars were looking untouchable, hammering HR United & Whipping Boys, 4-0 & 3-0 at home, they would follow this up with a 7-0 demolition of East Stirling in the League Cup 2nd Round. But they seem to be struggling away from home, drawing their only two away games at Cobra Arena & New Firm Park

At the wrong end of the table; Domination United, New Firm, Clydebank Cobras and HR United are all yet to record a win in the league. A lack of goals appearing to be the obvious problem. The Cobras fell down against Whipping Boys at home 2-0, providing the weakened team with a surprise early victory.

Whilst you cannot win or lose the league on day one, you can certainly lose a cup. All twelve SPL teams faced lower league opposition in Round 2 of the League Cup, not all of them successfully.

As stated The All Stars made light work of East Stirling. New Firm hammered Alloa (SD2) 5-0, and there were 4-0 wins for both Whipping Boys & HR United over Brechin (SD2) & Stirling (SD2), and a 3-0 win for F.C Holtaskóli over Montrose (SD3). Whilst Flint City, Tobar na Màthar, Domination United, Highlanders and New Bloc FC all managed single goal victories.

Two shocks this round were home defeats for The Cobras, losing 1-0 to Partick Thistle (SD1) and Galashiels Juniors who twice lead against plucky East Fife (SD2) only to be pegged back each time. East Fife actually missed a penalty in the 27th minute of extra-time which would have spared Galashiels the heart-ache of a 13-12 shoot-out defeat. Each team scored their opening nine penalties, before East Fife missed, only for Jonas Glockner from Juniors to miss as well (Fancy a German having misfortune in a penalty shoot-out). Youth prospect John Middleton missed the decisive penalty, which leaves only ten SPL teams in the League Cup 3rd round.

New Firm vs Highlanders
East Fife (SD2) vs HR United
Domination vs	Whipping Boys
F.C Holtaskóli vs	Queen of Sth (SD1)
Dundee (SD1) vs	New Bloc FC
Dunfermline (SD1)	vs	Flint City
Partick Thistle (SD1)	vs	Horden All Stars
Tobar na Màthar vs	Clyde (SD1)

Transfer Activity

Summer Transfers

Despite being the joint richest club, Domination United made little inroads in the transfer market. By contrast the other 'Bank Balance Level 1' club HR United brought six new players to the club, including the top two transfer fees. They've had little time to make an impact so far, but they are still in the cup, with a game in hand, and with The Whips and The Cobras back to back, you'd expect to see a rise up the table before too long.

Highlanders, All Stars, New Bloc & New Firm have all been very busy in the transfer market but have largely been buying squad players. Tobar na Màthar have let their backup goalkeeper leave for TNS on loan, which could prove fatal if Ronnie Young were to pick up an injury.

Speaking of injuries; New Bloc FC (5 injured), HR United (4) and The Cobras (4) have had the worst of it so far. Whilst Flint City, Whipping Boys and The All Stars only have one injury, Domination have zero. (Although The All Stars have the most serious injury, with striker Reece Tomlinson out for another 3 months with a broken foot).

Which Ingredient?

I'd like to reference the whole point of the sign-up when it seems appropriate. With reminders of peoples choices in the chosen areas at a time when it is relevant. With this in mind I've noticed a trend in TV Fixtures.

Tobar na Màthar 'Reputation Level 1' have been chosen for TV in fifteen of their opening seventeen league matches, including the opening seven. An astonishing 88%. Flint City 'Fan Base Level 1' have been chosen for TV in seven of their opening nine league matches, and ten of their opening seventeen. There is a clear trend in club set-up affecting TV matches.

Tobar na Màthar 15/17
Flint City	10/17 (initially 7/9)
Domination	9/17 (but only 2/8 to start with)
F.C Holtaskóli	5/17
Highlanders	4/17
HR United	4/17
New Bloc FC	4/17
New Firm	4/17
Cobras 3/17
Galashiels	2/17
All Stars	2/17
Whipping Boys	1/17

I was going to open with them for the game thread, I only uploaded that out of frustration that it is going to change (Only 1 lg game, but the cup game is pretty important. A few signings may be different.)

I am at work now, so I cannot confirm these links, and I don't have my thread spreadsheet either, but I believe these are the file names of the initial squads (which won't have changed).

Team 1

Team 2

Team 3

Team 4

Team 5

Team 6

Team 7

Team 8

Team 9

Team 10

Team 11

Team 12

If someone could confirm these, that'd be great. They should be in alphabetical order. This will be better when I start the game thread tonight.
