Welcome to the FIFA League Of Nations

The Back Story

The strength and popularity of the various continental level Champion's League around the world, in particular in Europe, and the continual club vs. country debate, raises the question is international football becoming obsolete? Ashley Cole once said that Arsenal would beat England, and Paul Scholes claimed he scored more for Man U than England because Man U had better players. The power of the G-14 Alliance of clubs in particular was becoming to much to handle.

The G-14

The G-14 was founded in September 2000 by 14 leading clubs to provide a unified voice in negotiations with UEFA and FIFA. New members could join by invitation only. In August 2002, four more clubs joined, taking the membership to 18, although the organisation retained its original name.

As the leading clubs in European Football, their power on the world stage was best demonstrated during the 2006 FIFA World Cup where they provided 22% of participating players. This supported their assertion that national associations should pay players' wages whilst on international duty and provide compensation in the case of injuries. In April 2004, G-14 initiated a preliminary investigation into FIFA by the Swiss Competition Commission, when they complained of FIFA's requiring their players to be available for FIFA international competitions without compensating the clubs. FIFA president Sepp Blatter refused to negotiate with the G-14 on the matter.

On 5 September 2005 the G-14 clubs decided to take FIFA to court over paying players for internationals after the Belgian club Charleroi lost Abdelmajid Oulmers in November for eight months when he was injured playing for Morocco.

Prior to the 2006 FIFA World Cup the G-14 members demanded a 'fair percentage' of receipts from tournaments, such as the World Cup, to compensate for the clubs releasing players to compete in these tournaments.

The League Of Nations

FIFA has taken the fight to the G-14 and thrown all their financial muscle behind the creation of the League Of Nations. They have taken the fight directly to the G-14. A two tiered league structure has been created in place of the Malaysian Super League, with 14 teams in the first Division and 14 teams in the second division. One Club will represent each nation. Each club will choose a squad with a total of 23 players. (The Malaysian League requires one Under 21 player to be present in the starting eleven, so you should consider that in your squad). The tournament will run for four years, with each player tied to that club for that period of time.

Here is your chance to manage a nation. I will be needing 28 people to choose a nation (An additional two or three could be added in lower leagues to be promoted if there are too many people)

Most aspects of the club will be at the discretion of the chairman (the signupee!). I ask you to persevere through the signup form to personalise your nation-club, but anything you leave blank will be randomised.
