And why would they put out such an attacking/suicidal formation?

It isn't really suicidal, there is still 4 at the back and two in the middle who can track back, and their mentality may not be attacking at all, the formation just makes it look like they want to attack.

They were 5 points off staying up so they were probably desperate.

I think having 4 strikers on the field is meant to mean attack, attack, charge. It turned out to be pretty suicidal anyway, My Bradford PA side thrashed them 5-2

I remember Reading used to be obsessed with the 4-2-4 in in either '07 or '08 (I forget which). You'd have situations like them being 1-0 up 15 minutes into a tight relegation battle and they'd switch to 4-2-4.
