How to stop wingers?

Recommended Posts

have good positioning and tackling for the fullback.

i tend not to show wingers onto their weaker foot cos it would encourage them to cut inside.

Depends. If they are poor crossers and the oppo forwards are midgets, keep them on the wing to make ineffectual crosses. However, if your scout says the striker is a dangerman and stop the supply to him, you might be better making the winger cut inside.

On the other hand, if the winger has good dribbling and passing skills, and your DCs are slow but win everything in the air, you are better off keeping him outside.

So, there are a few factors to consider on a game-by-game basis when you set your OIs.

I always close the wingers down, and occasionally show them onto their weaker side. My full backs don't bomb up the pitch too much either - the opponent's half is 'nosebleed territory' - so they don't get caught out of position.
