The Final Standings Predicition League, sponsored by Holiday Man

The Basics

This is a basic final standings tipping competition with a slight twist. You have to accurately predict the final league tables of the selected leagues each season that I will sim using Football Manager 2009 starting with all 4 Scottish Leagues in the 08/09 season.

I am opening this up to 20 people only, as this does require you to keep inputting your tips, as failure to do so will see you penalised (expanded upon in the "Points Scoring" section) and you will eventually be booted out of the league altogether. I don't know how long I intend on doing this, but I hope to get a least a fair number of "Real Life" seasons out of the way, which I will expand now upon.

I fully understand people have other commitments, and won't always be able to submit their tips, but if you can let me know before a season kicks-off I can give you a pardon for 'x' amount of time needed. Failure to notify me may see you kicked out of the league for the following season.

The 20 members will be competing for the title of League Champions over a course of a season. There will be 4 Rounds with 4 League Table Predictions in each, resulting in the final standings of an RLL season being played over 4 rounds of 16 predictions. Players will be ranked in the Real Life League from the scores they achieve from their correct predictions.

Each RLL Season will be based on the same 4 leagues over 4 simulated seasons. So for example in Season I, Round 1 will be based on the 4 Scottish Leagues of 08/09. Round 2 will be based on the 4 Scottish Leagues of 09/10 and so on. When Season II kicks off, the 4 leagues will be different, and may be based on the top 4 English Leagues for example.

It's first come first served, so get in quick for the First Division spots!

Points Scoring

In a Round

- For every correct team placement you earn 1 Point.

- For every correct consecutive team placement on the standings the score is multiplied by itself (2 consecutive correct team placements x 2 = 4 Points, 3 consecutive correct team placements x 3 = 9 Points). These scores do not carry over between divisions (for example, if you pick the correct 12th placed team in the Premier Division and 1st placed team in the First Division, they will count as 1 Point each)

- For every round you can "Double me up!" on one particular division. Your final score will then be doubled for that particular division ONLY. - This is very important!

In the Real Life League

- For every Division submission you will get a bonus point (with your bonus point being doubled on the "Double Me Up!" Division that you select. So should you submit for all divisions in every round, including selecting a "Double Me Up!" Division, the least points you can finish with in a season is 20. Only players with 0 (zero) points at the end of a season will be relegated out of the league, with anybody sitting on a waiting list replacing them. The league may or may not expand further should this take off.

Real Life League Standings

- All 4 scores for each Division will be tallied up and you will be ranked from most points to least in the Real Life League. Any players tied on points will be divided with the person scoring the highest in one of his Division predictions getting priority. If that fails to break the tie it then gets given to the player with the highest "Lowest" score for one of his Division selections. Should that fail to separate the players, priority on goes to the player who finished higher up the league the season before (priority on who signed up first for Season I).

Tips for surviving the Real Life League

- Each new season will always start with the 08/09 season. So have a look at your own single player games and try to look for patterns. Does a certain team always get relegated? Does a particular team always seem to gain Promotion one way or another? Are any teams over-rated/under-rated in the game, resulting in a team being placed higher or lower than in real life?

- When in Rounds 2, 3 and 4, when things become a bit less predictable, look at the last seasons standings as a guide. Bayern Munich may have won the league, but did they do it convincingly? How many other teams were in the hunt for the title with them? Did the team who gained promotion in the previous season usually struggle in all your single player games.

- Use the "Double me up!" rule on the division you know best. This will most probably be the top division in each league, but always make sure you use it in every round. It is a free chance to get double points, even if the 4 leagues being run aren't your favourite. This rule could potentially save you from bottom place, or push you into the champions spot.

- If you are trailing another user by a few points going into the final round and you are desperate to beat them to win the league for example, always make sure you submit your selections AFTER the other person. If you submit first, they can just copy every single selection you made and it will then be impossible for you to beat them. Just make sure you get in before the deadline!

Season 1 Pre-Season Real Life League Standings

Key: All scores include Bonus Point if applicable. Green numbers represent Divisions in which the player used the "Double Me Up!" rule. All "Double Me Up" division bonus points are also doubled. Average for Rounds and Overall is your score divided by the number of teams in the round (in this case 42). The Average is used to work out where you sit overall when multiple seasons are completed.

Furthermore, I have also scrapped the 2 divisions rule. Nobody will be relegated anymore, with players only being booted out for non submissions for all 4 rounds in a season. For further information check the initial post.

- Simply place the teams in order of where you predict they will finish. Please ensure all teams are present and correct and that all Divisions are in order (PL, D1, D2, D3). Please bold (with the tags [ b] [/b] without the space in the first tag) an entire division for the "Double me up!" rule, like this:

Great stuff

A great start to Season 1 for Conners and Pluckaduck as they picked up 20 points from the Premier League with the "Double me up!" rule. Generally, all the top players picked a Celtic-Rangers 1-2 finish for a combo of 4 points, doubling up to 8 with a successful "Double me Up!". St. Mirren proved to be many peoples undoing, finishing a surprise 3rd place which ended everyones combos if they picked Celtic and Rangers in that order.

A few picked Motherwell with Hearts, Hibs and ICT also picking up some points for some people. Although Aberdeen provided a shock finishing 10th, throwing nearly everyone's predictions out of the window. A number of people correctly predicted a Falkirk-Hamilton 11-12 finish, and once again received double points which really helped Pluckaduck and Conners. A special mention goes to Neilio who picked up 10 points in the Premier League section, but instead preferred to use his "Double Me Up!" rule on the Third Division instead. Unsurprisingly the Premier League also proved to be the most successful in terms of point returns.

The First Division proved to be the second best return in points on average although no one picked Ross County in first place. Many had St. Johnstone and Dunfermline, although not necessarily in that order. Denther picked St. Johnstone, Dunfermline and Airdrie Utd correctly, and outscored his Premier League "Double me Up!" division score, both he and Conners were the top scorers in that division with 7.

Statistically, the Second Division is the 3rd best in terms of points returns, but only by 1 point more than the Third Division. A large number picked East Fife in third correctly, with Ayr, Raith and Peterhead also picking up some points for some. Brettney1980 and surprise, surprise Connors, finished out on top with 6 points. Brettney1980 in particular managed Ayr, East Fife and Peterhead correctly.

The Third Division was the hardest to pick, with Dumbarton, Annan Athletic and Elgin City being picked correctly most of the time. The Third Division winner, corinthiano who picked up 8 points (nearly half of his Round 1 score), correctly predicted Stenhousemuir, Forfar, Annan and Elgin City. Neilio only managed 6 points with his Double me Up! rule, successfully picked Stenhousemuir and Albion.

With three rounds to go, Connors sits at the top of the table with Swafe 22 points behind him in 17th place. Blanco, Greasy Chip Butty and Jams1234 all failed to submit their selections and remain rooted to the foot of the table.

AtilasMiserly and Neilio will be kicking themselves at not using the "Double me Up!" rule on their Premier League selections while BenArsenal failed to notch a single correct prediction in 2 divisions, which really hampered his good work in the Premier League. Martin_ will be looking for a an improvement in his lower division selections as his good work in the top flight was ruined with a return of just 6 points in the 3 lower divisions. That alone sees him 10 points off the pace in 4th spot.

Round 2 will most likely see a large reduction in points being scored as things become less predictable, which means the top 5 or 6 players are the most likely to win the competition now. You really do need a good start in these type of competitions and every point for the following rounds becomes so-so important. With St. Mirren and Aberdeen giving up shock results in the last Round, is it worth gambling on them to finish in similar positions next Round? Or was it just a one off? What about Ross County? Many picked St. Johnstone or Dunfermline for promotion, so will Ross County and Falkirk battle for survival and perhaps give some people combo points? The season has only just begun in the Real Life League, but we are still yet to cut the weak from strong.
