Welcome to Gambler's End - the home of Sporting Lisburn

12th June 2007

At a recent council meeting in Lisburn, a few minor members voiced the need for more sporting competition in the town. One such man, was Bernard Browning. He proposed the creation of a new football team to enter into the Northern Irish Second Division. Many believed this idea preposterous, as a new club would need to build there way up. However, Browning revealed that his "contacts" could help in the new club's establishment.

19th June 2007

Browning's consortium meet in the town square along with several members of the public to discuss plans for the creation of the club. It was suggested to use the old, unused, sporting venue of Gambler's End, situated in the poorer district of Lisburn. The next big debate was over the naming of the team, however some Japanese tourists, looking lost, asked for the direction to Sporting Lisbon's stadium. And that, as you could say, was that, Sporting Lisburn were created.

21st June 2007

Since no managers of reputable experience or calibre are interested in the job, at the local market Browning holds a raffle for the new manager. It is revealed that unemployed former tambourine salesman Connor Murphy will become the first team coach. Browning manages to convince a foreign coach to assist the new manager, so 1-capped Latvian international Dennis Mintenmaarch joins the team.

28th June 2007

Browning gathers a selection of Lisburn(-ers?) to join the side, aiming to gain success. He was quoted as saying that "these men are the most likely to know how to play football to a standard better than that off a 2-year-old, whilst working on next to no money".

Kingstonian triumph in 7-goal thriller

Pre-Season Friendly - 2.7.07

For the first ever game in their history, Sporting Lisburn will take a 4-3 friendly defeat to English non-league side Kingstonian as a stepping stone to future success. Just 2 minutes into the game, Sporting were celebrating their first ever goal, Birdy dos Santos racing clear of the last defender to slot past the keeper. By half-time however, they trailed 2-1, including a penalty given away by Joshua Tyler. They fell 3-1 down early in the 2nd half, but Kinky Kingston clawed a goal back seconds from the kick-off, again a long ball being latched onto by a Lisburn striker to score. Kingstonian made sure of the result on 64 mins, but there was still time for Kinky Kingston to get a consolation goal deep into stoppage time, finishing off an Arthur White cross from near the penalty spot.

Lucky Burscough beat Lisburn as Bloodhound sees red

Pre-Season Friendly - 4.7.07

Sporting Lisburn will be wondering tonight what could have been after a 2-0 defeat to Burscough.

Despite dominating for long periods of the game, having several chances, Lisburn couldn't capitalise, and with 7 minutes to go, Drew was unable to stop Sherman going past him to slot home. This was followed by last minute drama, as Bertie Bloodhound was sent off for a last man tackle, from which Paul Buxton converted the free-kick.

I'm quite worried about the amount of times I was beaten in pace by the Burscough strikers in that game! icon_frown.gif

Strong Torquay defeat battling underdogs Sporting Lisburn who still can't tackle

Pre-Season Friendly - 6.7.07

The third and final match of Lisburn's England tour was always going to be the hardest, and they ended up on the wrong side of a 5-2 scoreline against Torquay, including giving away two penalties.

Torquay's first and final goals both came from the spot: the first from a foul by goalkeeper PoopyPants, the second given away yet AGAIN by Joshua Tyler!

However, Sporting managed two goals, the first a fine 20-yard strike by Birdy dos Santos from outside the area, and the second a tap in from the goal-line by Sneaky Ninja, certainly living up to his name on this occasion.

Overview and Match Stats

Team Stats

That concludes Sporting's tour of England, there's now a 2 week break before the next round of friendlies back in Northern Ireland, hopefully one will end in a win! icon_wink.gif

Second half display sees Sporting Lisburn gain their first ever victory

Pre-Season Friendly - 24.7.07

An early second half double-strike saw Sporting Lisburn gain their first ever victory, defeating rivals Lisburn Rangers 2-0. Kinky Kingston gave the away side the lead from close range following a deflected cross, and Ryan de Goal made sure of the win, latching onto a Dodgy Dave pass to slot home.

Lisburn cruise to victory over 1st Division Ballyclare

Pre-Season Friendly - 27.7.07

Sporting Lisburn kept up their good form by beating 1st Division side Ballyclare 3-0 in a fairly even game.

Lisburn's finishing was superior, and they opened the deadlock with a Bertie Bloodhound 25-yarder into the top left corner. Kinky Kingston added a second in the second half, throwing himself at Diego Polo's deflected shot, before Birdy dos Santos sealed the win, scoring what seems to be becoming a trademark for the striker, a 20-yarder into the top corner.

Workington get deserved victory in close scoreline

Pre-Season Friendly - 31.7.07

Workington dominated but couldn't add to their goals as they beat Sporting Lisburn 2-1.

Birdy dos Santos had headed an equaliser from a Craig Douglas cross, but the Lions of Lisburn subsequently fell behind again, from which they wouldn't come back from.

On the Treatment Table today....

Kinky Kingston - The Jamaican striker pulled his hamstring against Workington, and is expected to be out for between 2 weeks and a month. He is therefore likely to miss the start of the Intermediate Cup campaign.

Loughgall smashed by sharp-shooting Sporting

Pre-Season Friendly - 3.8.07

Sporting Lisburn took control as they thrashed non-league Loughgall 4-0.

Just 59 seconds into the game they had the lead, Ryan de Goal battling past his defender to curl a 25-yarder into the top left corner. Defender Pablo Gonzalez fired in a penalty just after the half-hour mark, and in the second half Arthur White accelerated past the oppositon LB to whip a shot accross the keeper into the bottom left corner. The result was made safe by Craig Douglas, who put in a free-kick from 25-yards.

On the treatment table

Sergio Marinelli bruised his head in the last friendly, and is expected to be out for 5 days, missing the next two friendlies. He is likely to return for the Intermediate Cup.

Lisburn lucky as St Joseph's Boys almost comeback

Pre-Season Friendly - 6.8.07

Sporting Lisburn had looked comfortable at 3-0, but two late goals led to a nervous finish as the 2nd Division side won 3-2 over St. Joseph's Boys.

Loic Philippens hit a quickfire double to put Lisburn 2-0 up, the first after Robert Boyle had hit the crossbar, the second from a Dodgy Dave through ball, and the result seemed to be made certain when Birdy dos Santos finished off a rebound after Philippens had been denied a hat-trick. Despite the nervy finish, Sporting still won.

Overview and Match Stats

Team Stats

An own goal, a missed penalty and a (deserved) last minute equaliser despite many other chances sums up an unlucky day for Lisburn

Pre-Season Friendly - 9.8.07

Sporting Lisburn will tonight be wondering how their team failed to defeat non-league side Barn Utd after a 1-1 draw.

They fell behind after Bobinho de Silva turned in a Barn Utd cross into his own net, after Ryan Andrews had parried the ball. Lisburn had a penalty late in the 2nd half, but Alex Drew could only hit it straight to the keeper, summing up the team's day in front of goal. However, they got a deserved equaliser at the beginning of stoppage time, with every Lisburn player in the area (including keeper PoopyPants), Diego Polo's header found it's way past several players into the net.

Overview and Match Stats

Team Stats

Now we're into competitive competition, up next is the first Intermediate Cup group game against 1st Division side Carrick.
