The Liverpool Thread 05/06 - Former Champions of Europe

IIRC the players don't start training sometime next week? But I felt like opening a new thread anyway so it does'nt matter icon_biggrin.gif

Anyway, the fixture list has been printed for next season and we start away to Middlesbrough on Saturday, August 13th. Other important dates for this year are :

Saturday August 20th - First home game and against newly promoted Sunderland.

Saturday September 17th - The day when the Manc's will fall at Anfield icon_wink.gif

Wednesday December 28th - The first Merseyside derby of the season at Goodison park.

Saturday March 25th - The second Merseyside derby, this time at Anfield obviously.

Saturday April 29th - Final home game against Aston Villa.

Sunday May 7th - Final game of the season against Portsmouth.

Liverpool's Premiership Fixtures 2005/06

August

Sat, Aug 13 Middlesbrough (A)

***Full fixture list removed due to copyright reasons***

Please note that the fixtures in December will change a bit because we'll be playing in the World Club Championships in Japan.

Talking Points For The New Season

1) Will Reina bring something better between the posts or will he be a flop?

2) Who would you like to see at the club?

3) We've been heavily linked to Dirk Kuyt, would he be something for us?

4) Pellegrino, Diarra, Biscan, Smicer and Diouf have left and Baros and Diao look to be leaving aswell. Any shocks? Bad moves? Who would you like to see leave?

I'll kick off the talking points shall I icon_biggrin.gif

1) From what I've seen of Reina (admittingly only a handfull of matches) he seems very good. What I'm very excited about is his positioning. Is it just me or does he always look like he's in the right spot all the time? He's good in the air and good reflexes aswell. He'll definatly give Dudek a run for his money and it should seal Kirkland's fate at the club. IMO he'll be a good buy icon14.gif

2) Realisticly I would like to see a good right and left winger and a new central defender. If we're going to be playing the 4411 system we need better pace down the wings and we need more options in the central defense. Carra is immense but Hyypia ain't getting any younger and some pace would'nt hurt.

3) He seems like a natural born predator infront of goal but so did Cisse when he arrived from France and IMO I think we should be giving Cisse a new chance because he was just getting into some sort of form before his terrible leg break,

4) IMO so far Rafa has done the business when it comes to selling. Pellegrino was a flop, Diarra would'nt break into the squad, Biscan did better this season but it still was'nt enough to see him stay, Smicer was injured most of the season and I'm not too sad to see him leave, Diouf has diciplinary problems and I'm happy we're not linked with that muppet anymore. If Baros leaves then Kuyt would definatly be coming so we get even more competition for a starting spot up front. Diao can definatly leave thank you.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> Liverpool have made a swoop for Spanish teenager Antonio Barragan from Sevilla.

The 18-year-old has been in Sevilla's youth set-up and the Spanish side were desperate to sign him on a professional contract.

Rafa Benitez has been monitoring Barragan's displays at youth level and the youngster decided not to accept the deal on offer in Sevilla in order to join the European champions.

Sevilla are not happy at losing the Spain Under-18 international, and will be looking for a decent amount of compensation from The Reds.

"He has been negotiating with Liverpool for the past six months," said Sevilla sporting director Ramon Rodriguez.

"The Fifa rules regarding young players who do not have professional contracts have favoured us on many occasions and this time it is Liverpool who have taken advantage of them to take the player.

"We tried to keep him, but the player has freely chosen another route. We have looked after him, but he has decided to leave Sevilla."

Sevilla have a good record in producing young talent, with Jose Antonio Reyes the biggest name to flourish when swapping Spain for Arsenal.

Benitez has not been scared of using his knowledge of the Spanish game to add new faces to his Liverpool squad, and Barragan may be just the first of a busy summer of spending for the Merseysiders.

The Reds will need all the fresh legs they can get, and quickly, with a packed season ahead of them starting as early as mid-July with the first qualifying rounds in the defence of the UEFA Champions League crown.

Benitez has spotted the potential of the well-thought of Barragan and he will add more depth to Liverpool's squad when he moves to Anfield.

I doubt anyone's seen him play but you never know. Has anyone seen him play?

Cleaned it up a bit as well I see. Oh well, resistance is futile.

(ESP)-SEVILLA EXPECT BARRAGAN TO JOIN LIVERPOOL

SEVILLA EXPECT BARRAGAN TO JOIN LIVERPOOL

SEVILLE, June 24 (Primera Liga) - Young Sevilla right-back Antonio Barragan is

on the verge of a move to Champions League winners Liverpool, according to the

Spanish club's director of sport Ramon Rodriguez.

Barragan, who has just turned 18, has not made an appearance for the Primera

Liga club's first team, but he caught the attention of Anfield boss Rafael

Benitez with a series of superb displays for the Sevilla youth side.

It seems that former Valencia coach Benitez is now poised to complete the

deal, after Barragan rejected the chance to sign a professional contract in

Seville.

``He has been negotiating with Liverpool for the past six months,'' Rodriguez

told reporters on Friday.

``The FIFA rules regarding young players who do not have professional

contracts have favoured us on many occasions and this time it is Liverpool who

have taken advantage of them to take the player.

``We tried to keep him, but the player has freely chosen another route. We

have looked after him, but he has decided to leave Sevilla.''

Although Barragan lacks first-team experience, he will add competition to the

right side of Liverpool's defence.

Republic of Ireland international Steve Finnan has been first choice at

right-back for the past two seasons. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Shocking jumping the gun for this new thread.

Never mind, life goes on.

So...TNS! Trip to the Millenium Stadium of TNS get permission to play there?

Prefer going to Lithuania or the Faroes (if we get past TNS, of course icon_biggrin.gif)?

LIVERPOOL CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE

Pre-order with Sky Sports, saving £3, and relive the season's review on DVD.

Liverpool will start the defence of their UEFA Champions League crown against Total Network Solutions.

Just a month after lifting the trophy in a memorable night in Istanbul, Liverpool were in the pot for the first qualifying round being drawn in Nyon.

Rafa Benitez's side were fearing a massive trek to the far flung outposts of Europe, but their first qualifying game will be against the Welsh minnows.

The holders will start their defence on July 12 or 13 with the first leg played at Anfield, with the return - which could be staged at The Millennium Stadium - to be played a week later.

The Welsh champions had offered to face the European champions for their place in the compeition, when it was unclear whether The Reds would be allowed to defend their trophy.

Uefa decided to allow Liverpool back in the compeition, and TNS will get their wish as they will play Liverpool in their first game since winning the Champions League against Milan.

In the second qualifying round, Liverpool face either a trip to the Faroes Island or Lithuania after being drawn to play the winners of the tie between HB Torshavn and FBK Kaunas.

Again, the draw has been kind to the Merseyside outfit, providing the beat TNS, with both the Faroes and Lithuania not as big a journey as they could have been given.

The Reds will travel to play the away leg first, on July 26/27, with the return at Anfield a week later.

Celtic were also involved in the second round draw, and Gordon Strachan's side have been drawn against the winners of Slovenians NC Gorica v Albania's KF Tirana.

The draw for the 1st qualifying round of the Champions League is as follows:

Liverpool v TNS

FC Haka v FC Pyunik

HB Torshavn v FBK Kaunas

Levadia Tallinn v Dinamo Tblisi

NK Gorica v SK Tirana

Kairat Almaty v Artmedia Bratislava

PFC Neftchi v FH Hafnarfjordur

FK Rabotnicki v Skonto Riga

Glentoran v Shelbourne

Dinamo Minsk v Anothosis Famagusta

Sliema Wanderers v Sheriff

F91 Dudelange v Zrinjski Mostar

Ties to be played 12/13 July and 19/20 July.

The draw for the 2nd qualifying round of the Champions League is as follows:

HB Torshavn/FBK Kounas v Liverpool/TNS

Levadia Tallinn/Dinamo Tbilisi v Brondby

Partizan Belgrade v Sliema Wanderers/Sheriff Tiraspol

Debrecen v Hajduk Split

Kairat Almaty/Artmedia Bratislava v Celtic

NK Gorica/SK Tirana v CSKA Sofia

Anderlecht v FH Neftchi/Hafanarjordur

Valerenga v FC Haka/FC Pyunik

Rabotnicki/Skonto Riga v Lokomotiv Moscow

F91 Dudelange/Zrinjski Mostar v Rapid Vienna

Dynamo Kiev v FC Thun

Malmo v Maccabi Haifa

Glentoran/Shelbourne v Steaua Bucuresti

Dinamo Minsk/Anorthosis Famagusta v Trabzonspor

Ties to be played 26/27 July and 2/3 August

Tickets are only £10 each so its a good chance for any of you guys that dont get to Anfield much to get there.

Talk of TNS moving the away leg to The Millenium Stadium...

One thing I am annoyed about is the fact that ticket sales for the qualifiers don't count towards loyalty for future games in Europe. I aren't a season ticket holder but I want to get to as many games as possible this season...
