Finish 8th but still in Champions League?

Recommended Posts

I am managing Montenegro but just had a look at the Premier League, only to find Liverpool down in 8th but still qualifying for the Champions League. The have been deducted 9 points for going into administration so i'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. Also they did't win it pervious season so thats not the reaon for it.

Any one know why?

Didthey win the champions league that season as if you win it you get the fourth place sides (aston villa) place in next years competition. Aslo do you have the patch on that could make a difference? That is a funny season cannot imagine west brom in 5th what season is that?

No you don't, your memory isn't very good. Liverpool reached 5th place in 2004/05 and Everton were 4th that year at the end, but Liverpool beat Milan 3-3 on penalties, and Everton failed in the third round qualifying round of the CL 2005/06, so no, 5 teams take CL places. :)

Because of the outcry re this UEFA clarified and stated that no more than 4 will represent anyone country in the future - can't actually remember who loses out tbh, as a Sutton supporter its not something I worry myself about!

Yeah that was the one season , after that they decided that if the team that if the team finished 8th but won the champions league they would get the 4th place spot. It was only the one season that there were 5 teams in the champions league.

reillyg you did make it clear they didnt win it it i dont get why so many people are saying that.... strange...

He said they didn't win it the previous season but it is the current season that matters.

As they did not win it at all though then it is a bug.

If Arsenal was to win it this year and finish 5th they would enter next years Champions league at the expense of Villa if they finished 4th.

Yes, this is the current UEFA rule, Villa will get a spot in the UEFA cup. In 2005 there wasn't a clear rule so the english FA ruled that Everton would get the fourth CL spot, but UEFA ruled that England should get a fifth spot that year and Liverpool started in the first qualifying round.

If the 2005 scenario had happened this season Everton would have to play in the UEFA cup next season with Liverpool going straight to the third qualifying round.

UEFA goes to insane lengths to protect Liverpool in the Champions League. Presumably they figured out that they had finished outside of the qualifying spots, then allowed them through the semi-finals on a goal that didn't cross the line and then let them equalize via a penalty from an outrageous Steven Gerrard dive.

 Always one. You'll be telling us entry to the '06 tournament was bought next.

Back on topic: Did one of the top 3 win the CL the previous year?

No, according to the UEFA web site, the winner will always qualify direct for the group stages.

The 2009/10 access list has been changed according to the following principles: 22 teams (21 teams + the titleholder) qualify directly for the group phase instead of 16.
