We decided to keep it at three for the moment mate. :)

Can Canadians be admin for the wiki too? :p :D

Looks pretty good now. :)

18-02-2009, 22:56
I don't expect to be made an admin any time soon:D
Well at least you won't be disappointed then ;)

Never disrespect someone in a higher-up place than yourself. I might as well just ban you now :D

That is the Aqua theme. It also links the pages at the side. You could probably change the colours I suppose if you did not like them.

No, you can't change the colours if you use that theme.

Ooh quite like the look of that!

I'll try a different one and see what it looks like.

The thing down the side looks a pile of rubbish in that one, navigation looks mucked.

I got rid of the navigation thing down the side, is that alright with everyone?

I agree, I prefer the theme we were using before.

Edit: How would you get rid of that Peter?

That is the Bubble one but it is nearly the same as the first one.

The navigation is still there but the stuff down the left is just all the articles put in alphabetical order aswell.

I've done it, it shouldn't still be there.

It's gone but by the looks of it you could edit it if you want to use it and put whatever links you want on it.

I think it looked bad to begin with mainly because there was too many links on it in my opinion.

Anyway, the last theme I'll put up now.

Why else would I not post when most of you are awake? You're all posting and helping members on GQ while I'm in my beauty sleep. :D

You can ask jod about my Canadian-ness. ;)

That is the last one. Ironically it is called original but to be honest that is my favourite anyway but it is up to the rest of you as well obviously.

Which one does everyone want?

Oh yeah and rancer is very Canadian. :D

I'll put it back.

peter-evo

The only colours you can change as far as I can see are the background that I changed to pink and so on. :D

The links, text and menus like where it says manage wiki at the bottom.

You cannot actually change the white part behind the text.

And you not joining the wiki, arsenal?

I have sent out invites to everyone that edited or made an article. You mightn't get an invite if you haven't validated your account yet by clicking the activation link you get in your e-mail.

Please tell me if you haven't been given an invite, or just request one through the site.

One problem we have is that our wiki doesn't come up when you Google it. I suppose it will only get up to the first page as soon as we get enough views.

arsenal_2111
18-02-2009, 23:41
Could we ask Neji to add it to the Notice board at the top? Just to get more people alert, when it has more views it could be taken down.

I guess we could all be super cool and put it in our Locations:D;)

Yeah but there are some articles and their league is not on the home page. Bayern Munich has an article that is not linked for example and there are others. There is no link to the German Bundesliga on the home page either. Is there a reason or did we just forget? There is currently no way of getting to it from the home page without going into recent changes.

I said earlier, I made the posts for clubs but I don't know how to make groups e.g. Bundesliga for them. So I had to just leave them there. I said it somewhere, iirc.

Edit the home page and then under the Editing section type the name of your article and highlight it and then at the top of the screen you should see a little globe icon. Click that and link it to the article.

EDIT: Peter, you can change your location to twice now. :D

It only took me about 10 minutes to do (felt i should add something seeing as i've posted alot in this thread) so i have no problem at all if it's replaced by pnefc22's article, considering he had already said he would do it. Apologies for not noticing this before.

We need money and internet wizz's for that mate.

I think you could get a free webspace so money would not be a problem. Creating a website would not be too difficult either.

However I still prefer the wiki at the moment as with creating a website I think we would be tinkering around with the layout, design and how it looks rather than just focusing on the content which is the most important in my opinion.

peter-evo
19-02-2009, 01:50
Maybe when the wiki is finished, I am sure Jez could help with some of the stuff!

small Mac
19-02-2009, 02:02
Also the beauty of a Wiki is that anybody can come along and add/update information, where as an actual website might be less accessible and therefore potentially miss out on alot of knowledge.

I hope no-one minds, but I have added some info to the SPL league page, some of the league rules and setup was missing, and as it is usually my league of choice I guessed I should put it in. Also unless anyone else has started it I would like to write the Celtic page.

Seconded, I don't like the look of the table. I just checked, it was jod.

CaptainPlanet
19-02-2009, 11:10
It was me.

I don't like scrolling and as more and more articles get added it'll end up as one long list to scroll down through to get to the relevant section.

Navigation needs to be smarter as it grows.

Is there any way to spread out the text better without the table? I find the table very off-putting for some reason. I agree that the text needs to be spread out better

We can yeah. What do you all think of aligning the text in the table to the left, instead of the way it's centered at the moment? I think that's what I find most off-putting.

CaptainPlanet
19-02-2009, 11:24
I don't like the fact that the table is visable at all, but I can't find a way of hiding it. I just don't want a big list.

If you can find a better way of spreading it out then go for it, It was only a quick play.

peter-evo
19-02-2009, 11:24
Go for it, I would also like the link colour changed as I hate the purple that the links turn.

ahmufcwafc
19-02-2009, 11:26
What link colour do we want then?

CaptainPlanet
19-02-2009, 11:27
Navy blue (not the light blue) regardless of whether the link has been clicked or not, and left alligned with bullet points for each of the links under each heading.

And I'll try and find out how to hide the table border.

I'm more than happy to front the cash, but can't do it from work.

ahmufcwafc
19-02-2009, 12:07

hamilton162

Do you know of any.

arsenal_2111
19-02-2009, 14:06
Fwiw, I like the new design, with the table.

Still not the best it could be, but better than the scrolling.

I would be happy to pay towards one, but like others have said if we are serious about paying for one then we should find a better site to base it on.

Even if it means paying a little more, I think it would be worth it in the long term. Wikispaces does what we want it to do at the moment, but doesn't look very professional.

If we move from a wiki site to a dedictate website with useful info we just turn into another fansite, wiki as part of the site name has much more punch.

Yes, I say keep the wiki, and then when we are ready, we can use a more dedicated url.

Personally I prefer a wiki as it everyone can contribute although that has a a good side and bad side as well I think as it can lead to arguments. Obviously it can be abused as well but that can be undone easily enough. However I remember hamilton (not picking on you, just an example :D) said that he wants to edit the Wycombe article so nobody touch it. Anyone can come along and edit a wiki obviously so anyone who creates an article has to realise that it is not actually their article as such, as everyone has the right to edit it if they want to, especially if there is something in it they don't agree with like a player recommendation or something.

Also that is a thing about the club articles that arsenal got permission to use. Did the users agree that anyone can just come along and edit them?

A guest can also just edit out the name that was credited with creating the article.

We shouldn't pay for anything yet.

And, I think our own domain would be better than a wiki, to be honest.

Although, the wiki will do for now.

I will finish some articles and start my editing tonight.

I still need to create an account :D

I will compile the two CA articles together to make it a super article :D

Because the interface of the free site won't allow us too.

If you look at any other wiki site, none of them look like Wikipedia.

thb doesn't make sense.

What do you mean 'seek to imitate wikipedia'?

We aren't paying for this [yet], wheras Wikipedia have payed staff. This is not and will not be a website to make money, and we have little or no funds to put into it. Unlike Wikipedia, who raised around 1mil by begging.

Although the software Wikipedia uses is free but obviously you need servers to host the site.

I think the current set up is fine the way it is.

Galactus, we did experiment with the different layout options and colours last night and most people on here at the time thought that the current one is the best from the limited amout available on the free version.

MediaWiki is what Wikipedia uses.

You have download the software to a server. I don't how complicated it is to use though.

It is not like the other one where you just create a wiki on that site.

You would need to do it through copy and pasting if you have it hosted on a free webspace - highly annoying.

What I could say to you in the meantime though is that if you wish to edit the wiki link above to a FM wiki instead of FML one then I can host it for you :) Should you find an alternative webspace in the future then it will be easier to migrate through mySQL backups of the data which can be exported easily.

20-02-2009, 00:12
How do I enable uploading?

File uploads are an often-used feature of MediaWiki, but are disabled by default in all current release versions. To enable them, first make the upload directory (default images) writable by the web server (chmod 777 or allow the Apache user to write to it, etc.) then set $wgEnableUploads (http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgEnableUploads) to true in LocalSettings.php (i.e. "$wgEnableUploads = true;"). See Manual:Configuring file uploads (http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Configuring_file_uploads) for more information.

Also, are we going to get a proper badge? The FM background looks alright, but I think it would be great if we could make our own badge for it/

Ask Neji if he would maybe come up with something? He is a Photoshop wizard after all

We definately need our own badge. I'm sick of the FM09 one. Hopefully Neji will give us a hand, he is the master after all

I'll request a badge on Neji's site then - what type of badge are we looking for?

I think it needs to be similar to the Sports Interactive one, could we email SI and ask them for permission to use it on it? Maybe if we put wiki in fancy writing under it, for now.

I'd prefer if we had our own unique badge tbh. But if we can't get one, then I'd have no problem using the SI logo if we had permission.

In that case best to leave it to Neji:D

Again, what do people think of the Arsenal page? I can't seem to link to it, it just comes up with the home page adress. But search for Arsenal and it somes up.

It's theincrediblehulk that wrote it, I just wanted to make sure the layout is alright. And is the disclaimer in a good place? Or should it be at the top?

Doesn't matter as long as it takes you to the Chelsea page. Well it takes me to it anyway.

Go into the Premier League clubs page, click Chelsea. It will appear to be the home page's URL, but you'll actually be viewing the Chelsea page. That's what happened for me anyway.

Don't know who SnootyJim is, but he's welcome nonetheless

You are a member as once you register you become one this wiki I think.

I don't think you need to. They are automatically added once they register.

And I found snooty_jim on here. He just posted in the Woman Leagues thread a while ago. Anyway as I said glad you want to contribute as well.

In my personal details it doesn't say anything about being part of a FM group:confused:

Member of groups: Autoconfirmed users, Users
(User group rights)

Is that right?

Ok, I registered on the new site, and transferring the MLS stuff right now.

Just one quick question. How do I insert a table?

Yeah, I am pretty sure that is right.

That was the way it was for me when I registered initially as well.

In reference to the Club Reputation article does anyone know how to align text properly?

I want to make the figures line up properly to make it neater.

{| border="1"
|row1 column1
|row1 column2
|row1 column3
|-
|row2 column1
|row2 column2
|row2 column3
|-
|row3 column1
|row3 column2
|row3 column3

You obviously replace the row and column text with what you want in that particular cell.

And you can add in more rows and columns by following the layout.

Do you want it in a table? You can make a table like I outlined above without the borders if you want.

This page (http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Tables) will be of help to anyone who wants to use tables.

EDIT: Apparently I've already been spotted :)

I added some tables on the Club Reputation and CA/PA pages to make them a bit neater.

Infact this whole guide (http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Contents) will be useful to find how you do things on the wiki.

There's certainly a lot less vitriol here than Wikipedia... I used to make edits there then run and hide behind the sofa ;)

I used to as well but haven't contributed for a long time. There was a lot of debate on Wikipedia. The layout of pages whether they were important to be on it in the first place and other things often caused huge debate. :D

Oh and I said earlier that you have to upload the images to use them. You actually don't. We still can't link them externally yet though as JJay has to enable that as well if we want it.

We're not quite as big as Wikipedia to be honest :D

The more people joining the better it will be for the Wiki, so its good to see new people contributing

I've finished Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United(which took A LOT of work) and Wigan.

Seeing as the new Wiki has been made by all of us, should we change the introduction a bit?

At the moment it says

This Football Manager Wiki has been set up to give fans of the multi-platform management game a chance to learn things about the game, and find out all they need to know to run a succesful team.

The set-up was also largely to do with a request at the SI Forums in a thread by CaptainPlanet. We saw that the majority wanted a wiki page set up and I thought I would take it upon myself to create one.

I hope that the users who decide to create articles here will do so with utmost maturity, and will post only in subjects of which they have knowledge of.

I thought I would keep it short and sweet and let you read on about the more important things: Football Manager.

I think the second sentence needs changing a little, to give us all a little credit instead of just peter. Who fully deserves the credit, fwiw, for creating the first one.

I agree, but I think to be honest the whole front page / introduction could probably do with gutting.

Eventually it would be nice to see a structured page with various panels like you would for a typical gamewiki, and all of that type of information from above could be moved into its own 'About Wiki' page or similar.

Hence, maybe it's better to leave it for now, and wait until there's something more substantial in the way of pages whose links can then be used to populate the main page?
